Nine years ago, Daphne Caruana Galizia, a prominent investigative journalist in Malta, was brutally murdered by a car bomb outside her home. She courageously and passionately exposed massive corruption, but unfortunately many of these corruptions remain unpunished. As time swiftly passes, the question arises: Can Europe fulfill its promises and deliver justice?
Tragedy and Unanswered Questions
The men who carried out this crime have been imprisoned or confessed to involvement, but no one has been punished for ordering her murder. Last week, a jury acquitted Jürgen Fenech, one of the wealthiest and most famous businessmen in Malta, of charges of complicity in this crime. This decision has sparked waves of despair and anger among human rights activists and journalists.
Call for Justice
In today's world, when journalists risk their lives to expose the truth, such impunity can serve as a warning for all. Perhaps it is time for the European Union to pay more attention to this bitter reality and engage in real reforms in Malta. Is it not time to hear Daphne's voice?
Given recent events, this issue concerns not only Malta but all of Europe. Corruption and impunity can quickly spread to other European countries as well. Therefore, Europe's responsibilities in this regard are very serious and vital.
Can Europe fulfill its promises and end the culture of impunity? Or will we continue to be spectators of this tragedy?
