Sales of existing homes in the United States fell to their lowest level in over a year in August 2023. This decline has challenged buyers due to rising mortgage rates and high prices.

2 Percent Decrease in Home Sales

According to the National Association of Realtors, sales of existing homes last month decreased by 2 percent compared to July, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.98 million units. This marks the third consecutive decline in home sales and highlights the serious challenges facing buyers.

Causes of Sales Decline

Rising borrowing costs along with fluctuations in the housing market have left many buyers discouraged, causing them to refrain from purchasing homes. Mortgage rates have been pressured due to global developments, including the war in Iran, leading to a significant increase in the cost of buying a home.

As prices continue to rise, buyers are faced with tough choices. Should they wait for prices to drop or buy a home under current conditions? This is a question that many buyers are currently grappling with.

This concerning situation for buyers and the housing market as a whole also serves as a warning sign for the economy. If the trend of declining sales continues, it could have negative repercussions for the job market and economic growth.
